Scores:
Tuesday: 8-4 Win at Cincinnati. Welcome back, Presley. Box score.
Wednesday: 5-4 Loss at Cincinnati. Late comeback not enough. Box score.
Thursday: 5-4 Win at Cincinnati. Bucs take a see-saw battle in 10. Box score.

Season Record: 29-27, 2nd place in NL Central, 2.0 games back

Notes: The Pirates take two of three from the first place Reds to creep to within two games. Alex Presley was a huge spark plug after being called up on Tuesday. Really everyone on the team looked good at bat at one time or another.

May Recap

A week late with this, but here goes.

The Pirates went 15-13 in May to bring their overall record to 25-25. They had a three and a four game winning streak and never lost more than two in a row.

The offense improved more than half a run, from 2.64 runs per game to 3.18 rpg. Unfortunately the pitching regressed almost a whole run, going from an even 3.00 rpg to 3.93 rpg. The big star of the month was James McDonald. The tall righty was 3-1 with a 1.54 ERA, 10.0 K/9 and held opponents to a .509 OPS.

Remember that tough April schedule the Pirates had and how things were going to be easier in May? Well, easier is relative. Pirates opponents played .528 ball (149-133) in May compared to .570 in April.

Other Notes:

The Pirates won four series, lost four series and split two.

Record vs
NL East: 5-5, 33 RS, 38 RA (3.30 RS/G, 3.80 RA/G)
NL Central: 9-6, 49 RS, 59 RA (3.27 RS/G, 3.93 RA/G)
AL Central: 1-2, 7 RS, 13 RA (2.33 RS/G, 4.33 RA/G)

Home: 11-7, 52 RS, 54 RA (2.89 RS/G, 3.00 RA/G)
Away: 4-6, 37 RS, 56 RA (3.70 RS/G, 5.60 RA/G)

1 Run games: 9-3
2 Run games: 2-2
3 Run games: 3-2
4 Run games: 0-1
5 Run games: 0-2
6 Run games: 1-1
7 Run games: 0-1
9 Run games: 0-1

Summary: The Pirates were pretty lucky in May. They won way more than their share of one run games and gave up a good chunk of their total runs allowed in a few blowouts. The team as a whole is playing much better ball to end May than they did to start the month and that good play has carried over into June.

Presley Called Up

Pirates take Appel, Barnes in 1st Round

The Pirates selected Stanford RHP Mark Appel with the 8th overall pick in the 2012 First Year Player Draft. Appel was viewed as a potential #1 overall selection but fell due to signability concerns.

With the 45th pick the Pirates took Barrett Barnes, a toolsy OF from Texas Tech.

Appel may have less leverage signing with the Pirates than he would have with any other team. Pittsburgh already has ace-level pitching prospects Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon and Luis Heredia in the system plus other solid prospects like Rudy Owens waiting in AAA. If Appel does not sign, the Pirates will receive the #9 pick in next year’s draft.

This is not a case of the organization being cheap. Neal Huntington and Company have proven over the last few seasons that they are not afraid to spend big money on draft picks that deserve it. Major League Baseball has implemented a spending cap for draft bonuses this season. The Pirates’ total amount available to sign their 1st-10th round draft picks is $6.6 million. If they exceed that amount by more than 5% they will lose draft picks in coming years. The penalties are so harsh that I’m pretty sure they won’t be exceeding the cap.

The draft continues today with the second round beginning at noon. We’ll know a lot more about the Bucs’ intentions/strategy after today.

Brewers Wrap Up

Scores:
Friday: 8-2 Win at Milwaukee. 6 run 3rd more than enough. Box score.
Saturday: 5-1 Loss at Milwaukee. Bedard blows up. Box score.
Sunday: 6-5 Win at Milwaukee. 4 HRs provide just enough. Box score.

Season Record: 27-26, 3rd place in NL Central, 3.0 games back

Notes: A successful (read: winning) trip to Milwaukee! Scoring five runs/game will go a long way to keeping the team above .500.
