Brewers Wrap Up

Scores:
Friday: 9-3 Loss at Milwaukee. Karstens hurt. Box score.
Saturday: 3-2 Loss at Milwaukee. So close. Very winnable game. Box score.
Sunday: 12-8 Loss at Milwaukee. Ugly. Box score.

Season Record: 70-63, 3rd place in NL Central, 11.0 games back

Notes: What a let down. Coming off two outstanding wins against the Cards, no one expected the Bucs to fall flat on their faces and get swept. That said, the hitters were still okay. Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones continue to do as much as they can to get the team out of this slump. Jeff Karstens reinjured his groin and will miss his next start. Kevin Correia put up four scoreless innings in relief and may get to fill in for him. A.J. Burnett was more than good enough to win his game. James McDonald was every bit as bad on Sunday as he was good against the St. Louis.

Series Preview: The Brewers

Current record: 70-60, 3rd place in NL Central, 9.0 games back

Up Next: Milwaukee Brewers, 62-68, 4th place in NL Central, 17.0 games back

Season Series: 4-5 (2-1, 1-2, 1-2)

Notes: Since we last saw the Brewers on Sunday, they’ve taken three of four from the Cubs in Wrigley. Milwaukee is 8-2 in its last ten games. The Pirates will face three strikeout pitchers in this series, which usually gives them trouble.

Familiar Faces: Aramis Ramirez, Jose Veras, Nyjer Morgan

Probable Pitchers
Friday: RH Jeff Karstens (5-3, 83.0 IP, 58 K, 3.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP)
vs. RH Mark Rogers (2-1, 33.2 IP, 36 K, 4.28 ERA, 1.28 WHIP)

Saturday: RH A.J. Burnett (15-5, 157.0 IP, 136 K, 3.67 ERA, 1.25 WHIP)
vs. RH Marco Estrada (2-5, 100.2 IP, 104 K, 4.02 ERA, 1.21 WHIP)

Sunday: RH James McDonald (12-6, 159.0 IP, 141 K, 3.57 ERA, 1.18 WHIP)
vs. RH Yovani Gallardo (14-8, 168.2 IP, 172 K, 3.52 ERA, 1.26 WHIP)

Brewers Wrap Up

Scores:
Friday: 6-5 Loss vs Milwaukee. Late rally falls short. Box score.
Saturday: 4-0 Win vs Milwaukee. Team effort breaks 4 game skid. Box score.
Sunday: 7-0 Loss vs Milwaukee. Bedard falls apart in the 4th, 5th. Box score.

Season Record: 68-59, 3rd place in NL Central, 8.0 games back

Notes: Another tough series. You can’t expect to win more than one game when you only score 9 runs though. No one stepped up and carried the offense. Someone please make Jose Tabata stop running when he gets on base. Hisanori Takahashi pitched a clean inning in his Pirates debut. Jeff Karstens tweaked his groin after seven excellent innings but isn’t expected to miss any time.

Series Preview: The Brewers

Current record: 67-57, 3rd place in NL Central, 8.5 games back

Up Next: Milwaukee Brewers, 57-66, 4th place in NL Central, 17.5 games back

Season Series: 3-3 (2-1, 1-2)

Notes: The Brewers are in full-on 2013 mode. They’ve called up prospect Jean Segura after trading Cesar Izturis. They also released veteran starting pitcher Randy Wolf and are seeing what they have in their young starters. Ryan Braun is still hitting like a beast, while Jonathan Lucroy, Corey Hart and Aramis Ramirez provide punch to the rest of the lineup.

Familiar Faces: Aramis Ramirez, Nyjer Morgan, Jose Veras

Probable Pitchers
Friday: RH Mike Fiers (6-6, 87.0 IP, 86 K, 2.90 ERA, 1.14 WHIP)

Series Preview: The Brewers

Current record: 48-37, 1st place in NL Central, 1.0 game ahead

Up Next: Milwaukee Brewers, 40-45, 4th place in NL Central, 8.0 games back

Season Series: 2-1

Notes: Finally, baseball is back from the All Star break. The last time the Pirates went to Milwaukee they had just gotten to .500 at 25-25. They’re record since then has been a lights out 23-12. Milwaukee was 5 games under then and is still 5 games under now. Ryan Braun leads his team in almost as many hitting categories as Andrew McCutchen leads the Pirates

Familiar Faces: Nyjer Morgan, Aramis Ramirez, Cesar Izturis, Jose Veras

Probable Pitchers
Friday: RH James McDonald (9-3, 110.0 IP, 100 K, 2.37 ERA, 0.97 WHIP)
vs. RH Zack Greinke (9-3, 111.0 IP, 111 K, 3.32 ERA, 1.23 WHIP)

Two aces go against each other. This could be one of Greinke’s last starts for the Brewers, as he’s been named in several trade rumors.

Saturday: RH Kevin Correia (5-6, 91.1 IP, 35 K, 4.34 ERA, 1.30 WHIP)
vs. Marco Estrada (0-3, 51.0 IP, 55 K, 4.06 ERA, 1.02 WHIP)

Underwhelming! Estrada’s actually pitched pretty well since returning from a quad injury. Correia’s been put in this spot so that his softer stuff can serve as a buffer between the similar repertoires of McDonald and…

Sunday: RH A.J. Burnett (10-2, 93.0 IP, 79 K, 3.68 ERA, 1.30 WHIP)
vs. Yovani Gallardo (7-6, 108.1 IP, 107 K, 3.74 ERA, 1.38 WHIP)

I’m looking forward to seeing this one live. That’s right! I’m road tripping to Milwaukee this weekend with my wife. We’ll be visiting the esteemable @Wezen_ball and his lovely fiance. After that we’re going to spend the rest of the week in Chicago, so postings may not fall on a regular schedule, if at all. Expect plenty of pictures when I can upload them.

Brewers Wrap Up

Scores:
Friday: 8-2 Win at Milwaukee. 6 run 3rd more than enough. Box score.
Saturday: 5-1 Loss at Milwaukee. Bedard blows up. Box score.
Sunday: 6-5 Win at Milwaukee. 4 HRs provide just enough. Box score.

Season Record: 27-26, 3rd place in NL Central, 3.0 games back

Notes: A successful (read: winning) trip to Milwaukee! Scoring five runs/game will go a long way to keeping the team above .500.

Notes: If the Pirates have had a nemesis the last few years it’s been the Brewers, especially in Miller Park. Milwaukee is a shell of last year’s division winner. Prince Fielder left for the Tigers and his replacement Mat Gamel is out for the year. Starting SS Alex Gonzalez has also been lost for the season and C Jonathan Lucroy just broke his hand and is out for a few weeks. Ryan Braun is stil on the team and slugging as well as ever.
