Dodgers Wrap Up

Scores:
Monday: 5-4 Loss vs. Los Angeles Dodgers. Jones’ 4 hits go for naught. Box score.
Tuesday: 11-0 Loss vs. Los Angeles Dodgers. Horrible game all around. Box score.
Wednesday: 9-3 Loss vs. Los Angeles Dodgers. Not much better. Box score.
Thursday: 10-6 Win vs. Los Angeles Dodgers. Jones’ 2 HR lead the Bucs. Box score.

Season Record: 65-53, 2nd place in NL Central, 6.0 games back

Notes: A third horrible series in a row is capped off by a win in the series finale. Garrett Jones was a beast with a four hit game and a two homer game. He knocked in 10 runs too. Andrew McCutchen was walked five times and scored five runs. Pedro Alvarez had eight strikeouts along with his three extra base hits. Neil Walker had to leave Wednesday’s game early after dislocating his right pinky. Pitching? Eh, let’s not talk about the pitching.

Transactions: Signed 3B Dallas McPherson and assigned him to AAA. Traded RHP Daniel Cabrera to Arizona. Placed RHP Chad Qualls on the bereavement list. Recalled RHP Jared Hughes from AAA. Optioned LHP Jeff Locke to AAA. Recalled IF Yamaico Navarro from AAA.

Presley Optioned to Make Room for Jeff Locke

In a surprising move, the Pirates optioned OF Alex Presley to AAA and recalled LHP Jeff Locke. Kevin Correia is getting a spot start tonight so the team wanted an extra arm in the bullpen for the next few days; a totally understandable situation.

What make less sense to me is sending down Presley. Yes, Starling Marte, Andrew McCutchen and Travis Snider will be starting most days but its seems to me you’d want better backup options than Garrett Jones and Josh Harrison.

This move is probably just for a few days and then an outfielder (Jose Tabata?) Will be called up. But it seems to me that a better choice might have been to send down the almost-never used Jordy Mercer to get some regular at bats.

Tommy John Expected for Charlie Morton

News started breaking this morning that Charlie Morton, on the DL with elbow discomfort, has a torn ligament and will likely need Tommy John surgery. If that is the case then he won’t be back until the middle of next season, with no guarantee of being effective right away.

This is a big blow for Morton and a big blow for the Pirates’ pitching depth. For now, the ream is saying that Brad Lincoln will remain in the rotation until Jeff Karstens is healthy. I suspect that Rudy Owens or Jeff Locke will be starting in the big leagues by early July.

Mets Wrap Up

Scores:
Monday: 5-4 Win vs NY Mets. Three late runs win it. Box score.
Tuesday: 3-2 Loss vs NY Mets. Can’t solve the knuckler. Box score.
Wednesday: 3-1 Loss vs NY Mets. Only 1 run for the 9th time. Box score.

Season Record: 20-24, 4th place in NL Central, 5.0 games back

Notes: Andrew McCutchen and Josh Harrison were pretty much the whole show this series. I have nothing else good to say about the offense at this time. In two starts since his back spasms, Erik Bedard‘s totals are 11 IP, 8 ER, 12 H, 4 BB and 11 K’s. He hadn’t given up more than 2 ER in any of six pre-injury outings. If his next start continues the current trend the team may want to skip Bedard when his turn comes up again. The bullpen was stellar, allowing only 1 ER, 4 H and 3 BB with 11 K in 8 IP.

Relief pitcher Jason Grilli has been activated from the Bereavement List. Jeff Locke was optioned back to AAA. Locke made no appearances in his three days with the big league club.

Today’s series finale against the Mets is at 12:30. The Pirates are off tomorrow.

Gorkys Hernandez gets his first start today. Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez have the day off versus lefty pitcher Jon Niese . Lineup:

Tigers Wrap Up

Scores:
Friday: 6-0 Loss at Detroit. Verlander almost unhittable. Box score.
Saturday: 4-3 Win at Detroit. McCutchen leads the way again. Box score.
Sunday: 4-3 Loss at Detroit. 17 K’s, still almost won. Box score.

Season Record: 19-22, 3rd place in NL Central, 3.0 games back

Notes: Andrew McCutchen hits two more homeruns and the Pirates win. He gets no hits and they lose. Josh Harrison is hitting the ball well right now. I wouldn’t mind seeing him at shortstop a few games this week. Rod Barajas appears to have shaken off his early season slump. After a .143/.222/.184 April he’s hitting .310/.318/.667 in May. The writing is on the wall for Nate McLouth. He went 0-8 with 4 K’s over the weekend, including the game ender yesterday. All told he’s 0 for his last 20 with 9 K’s and 1 walk. Can we please get Gorkys Hernandez some at bats? It’s literally impossible that he could do worse. One of the biggest problems this team has on offense is strikeouts: 12 on Friday, 12 on Saturday, 17 on Sunday.

Grilli on Bereavement List, Locke Recalled

Relief pitcher Jason Grilli has been placed on the Bereavement List due to the death of his wife’s grandfather. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the extended Grilli family at this time.

To take his place on the roster, pitcher Jeff Locke has been called up from AAA. Locke was part of the 2009 Nate McLouth trade along with Charlie Morton and Gorkys Hernandez. All four pieces of that deal are currently on the Bucs’ big league roster.

Locke was called up for four starts at the end of last season and went 0-3 in 16.2 innings with 5 strikeouts, a 6.48 ERA and 1.86 WHIP. His AAA line for this season is 3-3, 47.2 IP, 36 K, 3.02 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. For now, Jeff is expected to pitch out of the bullpen in long relief.

Today’s game starts at 1:05. Lineup:

Jose Tabata RF
Neil Walker 2B
Andrew McCutchen CF
Pedro Alvarez DH
Garrett Jones 1B
Josh Harrison 3B
Rod Barajas C
Nate McLouth LF
Clint Barmes SS

Kevin Correia SP

Tigers:
Don Kelly CF
Andy Dirks LF
Miguel Cabrera 3B
Prince Fielder 1B
Delmon Young DH
Brennan Boesch RF
Jhonny Peralta SS
Alex Avila C
Ryan Raburn 2B
